Great concern has been rampant about the lack of “Hawaii” in the so-called “Hawaiian” activities, merchandise and demonstrations witnessed throughout the island’s hotels. Such items like leis and bracelets being strung with shells from the Philippines or tropical print bags, dolls and pot holders bearing the status of “Made in China”—even many souvenirs sold to visitors in Hawaii are created in and sold from such places as Bali, Thailand.

As odd as it can be, much of what is offered as authentic “Hawaiian” arts and crafts is actually imported from other foreign countries and guests of the islands haven’t the slightest clue!

As a result, a lot of time and energy has been spent on allowing the “real” Hawaiian culture to stand out and become noticed by all those millions of people who come to Hawaii annually. For much too long, the tendency was to push touristy trends like torch lighting ceremonies, Polynesian dancing revues and flashy hotels—all of which were ultimately lacking in substance when authentic “Hawaiian” cultural experiences were what was really desired.

In 1998, the Kauai Heritage Center of Hawaiian Culture and the Arts opened—a 1,200 square-foot facility with a purpose to educate and create mind awareness for appreciation and respect of the true “Hawaiian” culture. Exhibits in the Center focus on the Hawaiian quilts, hand-carved fishing tools, hula instruments and implements, as well as a vast array of mats, fans and baskets, to name just a few. Most of the artefacts making up the exhibits are treasured heirlooms belonging to Hawaiian families for decades.

The Center also instructs hands-on classes that probe and discuss all aspects of a specific subject, i.e., hula, leaf printing and the Hawaiian language. These sessions also cover lei making techniques along with the sharing of its protocols and customs that span the entire experience— from the preparation of materials to the actual leis disposal.

Realizing that to preserve Hawaiian culture and perpetuate its message is a daunting undertaking, the Center’s goal is not one of just providing an activity exercise but to share information and knowledge so that responsibility is assigned to the participant. Thus, programs are constantly in the planning stages, including work shops teaching cultural insights inspired and motivated by Hawaiian themes. The presenters are artists and practitioners specializing in their specific field of expertise.

Special permission was granted by the owners of the historic Coco Palms in Wailua, heavily damaged in Hurricane Iniki in 1992, to the students of the Center to sketch its structures and lagoons. More lectures will be presented on ancient places of worship and on these lagoons—which were first used as fish ponds by the Royalty.

The Center will also organize cultural excursions, like taking 5th-6th graders to learn about Hawaii’s environment, it’s native plants and about conservation. The group size will be limited to anywhere from 6 to 30 people because of the impact on the sacred cultural sites.

With the advent of new technologies and conveniences, many of today’s Hawaiians have forgotten the value and wisdom of the “old ways”. So, a comprehensive training program aimed at Hawaiian Islands’ visitor industry—hotel employees and business organizations—commenced based on traditional Hawaiian values.

This training program offers 8 hours of instruction covering subjects on healing with herbs, sacred offerings, massage, music, proverbs and poetry.

Perpetuating the integrity of the Hawaiian culture is what the Center is all about. Its goal, in short, is to accomplish every- thing possible to keep Hawaii “Hawaiian”. There is a constant vigil to correct false and inaccurate representations of Hawaiian practices. Both visitors and locals alike are encouraged to discover the “real” Hawaii and not fall victim to activities referred to as “traditional” when in fact, they are “gimmicks for amusement”.

Waipio Valley is called the Land of the Curving Water. It is one of the scenic wonders of the big island of Hawaii. This valley is chock full of meandering rivers that flow between taro patches until they flow into the breathtaking surf of the ocean. You can witness the magnificent waterfalls cascading thousands of feet down to the valley below. Waipio Valley is six miles across, sitting between 2,000 foot high cliffs.

History states that this valley once housed the ancient kings of Hawaii. Kamehameha the Great was given custody of Kukailimoku, the war god of the kings of Hawaii. Hawaiian royalty also used Waipio Valley as a retreat. For this reason this magical place was given the nickname, “The Valley of the Kings”.

Some say that as many as 30,000 people lived here at one time but it’s hard to imagine that today. A few residents continue to operate taro farms in the valley. Wild horses roam freely amongst the rivers filled with fresh water, lotus ponds, fruit trees and sandy beaches.

Waipio Valley is similar to a tropical Grand Canyon. The highest free falling waterfall in the world is in Waipio. The beautiful black sandy beach has varying ocean conditions. Be respectful of the water when you are swimming, bodysurfing, or boogie boarding. Many people enjoy playing in the river also. You will notice four-wheel drive tours, mule-drawn wagon rides and horseback rides are given by the nearby travel agency in Honokaa.

During our last and only visit to Waipio Valley, we stayed at the tiny lodge owned and operated by Mr. Tom Araki. The lodge is a converted schoolhouse that has five rooms, a shared bath and two kitchens. There is no electricity, no refrigeration and the water is always cold. Mr. Araki was kind enough to share the bathroom in his home which had hot water. The lodge is surrounded by taro patches, forest and beautiful blue sky. Two old dogs share the lodge. They have the good life. They are fed well by Mr. Araki and his constant stream of visitors but they have the privilege of exploring their valley when they desire. We were told that sometimes these dogs are gone for days but they always return, happy with the memories of their adventures and ready to be fed and warmed by the fire. Mosquito coils are lit at dusk. And at this time every day, we would settle into our routine of sitting on the porch with Mr. Araki, drinking sake and talking about the good old days.

Mr. Araki’s parents arrived at the Big Island from Japan in 1907 to work for the sugar plantation. Tom was born in 1909. He lived most of his life in Hilo then moved to Waipio Valley when he inherited the land from his father. The Araki’s own three patches of taro. Taro root is used to make poi, the famous staple of the Hawaiian diet.

We often walked around the valley during the day. It was a maze of muddy roads and meandering streams. Sometimes we would find sweet fruit still on the trees. Mango, breadfruit, grapefruit, papaya, avocado, oranges, persimmon, melons and berries can all be found growing wild. This seemed to be the ideal place to grow up. Perhaps we should add another nickname to this wonderful valley, “A Kid’s Paradise”.

Back in the year, 1906, the agricultural people of northern Luzon, called “sakadas”, set out and found Hawaii. Almost immediately, these immigrants found themselves knee-deep in trouble.

Apparently, agents working for the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association in Luzon had convinced these workers of housing, free transport—even $18.00 per month wages—to relocate to the Hawaiian Islands. Naturally and without hesitation, these “sakadas” imagined great wealth and in just a few short years, returning home.

Unfortunately, they had no idea how little of their hard-earned money would in fact be saved.

Hawaii’s plantations were already full of stable workers, which were mainly dirt cheap and fueled by the sweat of Japanese immigrants. But the Japanese were becoming weary of the lousy pay, all the legal restrictions and even the out-right bigotry toward them, something that dominated life in those times.

Plantation owners referred to the Japanese as the “yellow peril” which meant people who were trying to confiscate the land and somehow trade it to land barons in Tokyo. The Japanese were now at a point of organizing—even unionizing—to attempt better working conditions and treatment.

But the wealthy plantation owners, who were ruthless and corrupt, intimidated the Japanese by procuring people who were desperate, thus assuring and perpetuating cheap labor. The Filipinos became the lowest paid peoples working in Hawaii during this period.

Resentment by the lower classes, exploitation by the owners and having to endure the absolute worst in living conditions became a daily existence for the “scabs”, as the Filipinos were called. Sad times lay ahead for they were the first to be fired from inferior jobs, lowest for any promotions and the most discriminated against in respect to pay for equivalent work.

Just when the Filipinos believed that conditions could not get any worse, Hawaii found itself in political chaos. In 1898, just eight years previously, the United States had annexed the island kingdom, which was a boon for business and the plantation owners— but an outrageous maneuver for all of Hawaii’s social order.

The issue with the planters (owners) was to totally stop any chance of non-white residents to benefit from American-style privileges, such as the right to assemble to protest, the right to cast votes in an election—especially the right to negotiate via a union with an employer. Oddly enough, plantation owners started a campaign to gather up what they considered to be the most illiterate peasants in the Philippines. The thinking was to bring these people into the workforce in Hawaii as they would be the least likely to be aware of any rights.

In the early stages of the 20th Century, this new workforce, comprising of mostly men, found themselves far away from families as well as being totally isolated from their own village life. In addition to these depressing situations, none could speak English—which gratified the white elite

While being transported to Hawaii may have been a good thing for many, the fact remained that the Philippines themselves were going through harsh and repressive times. The Spanish had had a firm rule on them for over 300 years—a colonial rule unacceptable to the Filipino people. In June 1898, the Philippines became independent after winning a revolution from Spain. However, that independence was short-lived once the United States annexed them as a territory. The Filipino people were a free people but were referred to as U.S. nationals.

Migration to Hawaii by Filipinos (nationals) was common and simplistic. Some 8,000 of them came to Hawaii in the 1920s annually. Not much time would elapse before Filipinos exceeded Japanese numbers, thus becoming the biggest ethnic group laboring in the fields of Hawaii.

Unfortunately for the Filipinos, the Great Depression created massive unemployment throughout Hawaii. These people now found themselves in really dire straits! The United States had granted the Philippines their independence in 1935 and now Hawaii’s Filipinos discovered themselves stranded with no status anymore as a “national”—in effect, “a man without a country”. These poor and forlorn citizens of “nowhere” came to accept the notion that of all the ethnic groups in Hawaii, Filipinos most assuredly had been dealt the worst cards.

To state that Filipinos are the most diligent people in Hawaii would be an understatement. A case in point is the story of a Filipino who set sail from Honolulu, Hawaii, all alone, in a 24-foot craft, headed to the Philippines. During his voyage of eleven months, he had encountered several typhoons and unimaginable hardships. When arriving safely in the Philippines, many people had questioned his motivation. His reply was that he needed to prove the Filipino will and spirit!

That will and spirit has been the framework of survival for the Filipinos in Hawaii. Consider the fact the Philippines consist of over 2,000 islands with 80 languages and dialects. The early islanders saw a continual influx of cultures and bloodlines. Spain was influential in unification of the islands’ diversity, Catholicism and the demeaning customs of 300 years brought on by colonialism

Sadly, the U.S. Census in 2000 referred to Filipinos—not as a group— but as “Asian”.

In today’s Hawaiian culture, Filipinos consist of 15% of the islands’ population, but only 16.4% of the workforce. Most workers within this group are women. This is significant as other cultures have mostly men workers.

Like the rest of the United States, Hawaii remains at a low point where Filipinos must work menial jobs. However, a positive shifting of this concept is evident as Filipinos are teachers, political leaders, sports figures, lawyers and administrators. Filipinos continue to migrate to Hawaii more than 1% annually. Only the Vietnamese are the “other Asian” people increasing their numbers in the state. Nearly 50% of Hawaii’s Filipino families continue to speak their native tongues. Within this group, less than 20% speak English.

Notwithstanding the many challenges facing Filipinos in Hawaii, the point can be made that they as a people will be influential in all aspects of life throughout Hawaii—most notably over the next century. The most tell-tale sign of this positive trend is illustrated by the fact that between 1994 and 1998, nearly 60% of the total annual immigration of Filipinos to Hawaii became naturalized citizens of Hawaii.

That is truly a fitting image of the Filipino community embracing the “Aloha Spirit”.

Hawaii’s reputation as an island paradise that practices a relaxed way of life makes it a top tourist destination for couples, families, and anyone who longs to leave the pressures of the mainland behind. No matter which area you choose to visit, you are sure to be pleased as you are invited to take advantage of all that this string of beautiful and welcoming islands has to offer.

The Big Island of Hawaii is home to the Kona coast, the world’s most active volcano, and miles of beaches fit for swimming, surfing, and whale-watching. If it’s history you seek, there are old coffee plantations and restored villages up to three centuries old. If your vacation is incomplete without a round of golf, then don’t miss teeing off on the Konala coast. The Big Island offers a taste of all that is Hawaii, so be prepared for endless adventure and excitement if this is where you decide to unpack your bags.

Oahu also makes for a fascinating and rejuvenating visit. For families, the Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium, and the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park are great options. And, as you would expect, the beaches here are perfect for whatever it is that calls you to the water. Be it surfing, parasailing, snorkeling or fishing, it is likely that Oahu’s coastline has a spot for you to make a few memories. If you’d prefer to check things out from a different perspective, a submarine ride will give you an up close and personal view of coral reefs, exotic marine life, and perhaps a dolphin or two.

Molokai, northwest of Oahu, is the site of the world’s tallest sea cliffs. Take a hike off the beaten path, or hop onto a mule train for a truly unique experience. If you happen to stop by during the summer, make plans to enjoy the Ka Hula Piko festival. The birthplace of the hula is sure to put on a great show as it celebrates this traditional dance, inviting visitors to join in the fun.

If you’re the kind of traveler who hopes to avoid crowds and traffic, then Lanai is probably the island for you. In a place where nature runs free, it is easy to adopt a relaxed perspective on life after a few days spent exploring the untamed land. The marine conservation area located in Hulopoe Bay will take you back to the Hawaii of yesteryear, and the peaceful beaches will surely motivate you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the solitude.

For mountain views and a wide sampling of exotic flora and fauna, visit Kauai, nicknamed the “Garden Isle.” Kauai offers something for everyone, with tourist attractions clustered on the South Shore and cliffs and strong waves to be found on the North Shore. Kokee State Park is home to the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and scattered throughout the island you can locate all types of vacation rentals. From cool streams and waterfalls to beachside shops and restaurants, this island has it all.

Hawaii is an easy place to have a great vacation no matter where you lay your head at night, but be sure to choose a place to stay that will truly accentuate your island getaway. Vacation rentals often make good sense in Hawaii, as having a private space with lots of great features tends to make island living all the more appealing. Easy access to the beach and a deck with a perfect view of the sunset will make you feel like you haven’t a care in the world.

So if the gentle strum of a ukulele is calling out to you, be sure to reward yourself with the best experience possible. Skip waiting at restaurants and choose lodging that allows you to make your own romantic dinner. Forego a cramped hotel room with a tiny window facing a swimming pool, and reserve a beachside villa instead. An array of great Hawaii Vacation Rentals, can be viewed at HomeAway.com. If you’re going to Hawaii, go all the way.

Visit HomeAway.com as you start to plan the Hawaiin vacation you’ve been dreaming of.

Traveling to Hawaii can be a very enjoyable experience. Because of all the activities available, it is an appropriate destination for all ages and is a good place for family vacations.

Hawaii has some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. The grounds of these golf courses perfectly sculpted, and the hills offer views of the other islands, along with the perfectly blue ocean. If golf is not your idea of fun, Hawaii offers other attractions that you may find more appealing. Whether you desire to ride a horse down into volcano or lounge on a secluded beach, Hawaii has what you are looking for.

Hawaii offers accommodations for all types of budgets. Rates for hotels in Hawaii can range from as little as $49 a night to more than $350 a night. Rates for hotels may vary according to the time of year. Visiting Hawaii during the off season can get you better deals on hotels that would generally be considered too expensive. The off season runs from April to November. Finding a flight to Hawaii is fairly easy, as there are a good number of airlines that continuously fly to the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii often attracts newlyweds for their honeymoon due to its romantic setting. Hawaii offers plenty of activities that couples can participate in.
Every year millions of visitors from Japan, mainland USA and beyond land at
Honolulu International Airport ready to begin their vacation in paradise. Soon after
landing, most visitors hop in a cab or bus sent from the hotel and begin the journey
past downtown Honolulu and on to their reservation at a Waikiki hotel.

The allure of Waikiki is immediate. The packed streets, sounds of the beach, and
exotic histories call to the traveler who soon hits the streets. Venturing out in
Waikiki can be quite exciting. The streets are filled with foreign languages, throngs
of tourists are dressed in their beach best, and the beginning of surf history can be
seen at the end of the street. Waikiki can be so exciting that many visitors never
escape its imaginary borders. Approximately 6 million of these visitors miss the very
sites that locals find so endearing, remaining within the two square miles of Waikiki.

For those travelers interested in seeing Oahu through its residents’ eyes, please
read on.

Magic Island Beach Park - This popular park is located just west of
Waikiki, across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center. The park includes
two beaches, a three mile jogging path, tennis courts, and more. A walk around the
park will expose the center of Hawaiian culture - the family. Large extended families
gather around hibachis, spending the day together with a good food and plenty of
sun. The beaches are significantly less crowded, so for a great day, grab a barbecue
and head down to the beach at Magic Island!

The Contemporary Museum Honolulu - This small museum is located
high on a ridge at Makiki Heights Drive. The drive up the ridge offers amazing vistas
that would otherwise be missed by most Oahu visitors. The relatively small museum
offers changing exhibits in its five galleries. After traversing the galleries, visitors
can wander out onto the sculpture gardens. This is where the true glory of the
museum is revealed. The 3.5 acres of sculpture and meditative gardens are open to
the public and offer some of the most amazing views of Honolulu.

Leong’s Cafe - Many visitors look to a lu’au for more than entertainment;
they are after some great Hawaiian food. However, if you’re interested in real local
style Hawaiian food, you can’t beat Leong’s Cafe located at 2343 North King Street.
As a favorite for plate lunches, kalua pig, lu’au stew, lomi lomi, and more, locals
have been visiting this cafe for over 50 years!

Champion Malasadas - The local treat called Malasadas are so popular
that Fat Tuesday has been re-christened Malasada Day throughout the Hawaiian
Islands. One of the best and most famous bakeries is Champion Malasadas located
at 1926 South Beretania Street. These light portuguese hole-less donuts come with
and without filling and are absolutely worth the effort in getting them!

Honolulu Chinatown - A walk through the streets of Chinatown in like a
walk into another time and place. Whether you are looking for dim sum, fresh
produce, handmade leis, or the new hip lounge, you are sure to find it in Chinatown.
The streets and shops are exotic, offering items not found in a typical american
grocery. Guided walking tours are available for this historic district, but often the
best way is to simply meander through the streets, stopping whenever your interest
has been piqued.

If you are interested in seeing Oahu through a local’s eyes, be sure to spend some
time outside of Waikiki. Stop by some or all of the spots listed above and see some
of what truly makes Hawaii special.

Michelle is a travel buff who has recently moved away from Hawaii, but is anxiously
awaiting the day when she can return. In the meantime, she occupies her time by
helping others compare and select vacation options.

Kauai is indeed an island that can take your breath
away even at a glance. The everyday hustles and bustles
of life can drain every ounce of energy that we have.
There are various concerns that desperately calls for
our attention and time which can mess up our thinking
and everyday existence in this big world. That is why
there is a need for us to at least stop from our usual
routine and take time to enjoy and be free. Of course
there are lots of activities that can soothe our pains
and longings but the most effective of which, as
supported by studies and researches, is through nature.
Our mother nature has its own power to heal and regain
the lost energy of its vital components which include
man. That is why a break from the everyday monotonous
tasks can help a lot to refresh and remove the toxins
that can engulf our minds and bodies. There are
thousands of places to visit from all over the world
and one of that is the lush, alive and stunning island
of Kauai, Hawaii.

You can’t help but be mesmerized by the sparkling blue
oceans that stretch along the stately mountains and
hills that stood proudly on almost all sides of the
island. Freely flowing from the elevated areas are
gushing waterfalls that can truly refresh the tired and
weary mind. There are so many breath-taking places
waiting to be explored. It may appear to be a small
Kauai island but on almost all sides and corners are
landscapes and locations that can one’s attention and
interest. On the North shore of Kauai is the
spectacular Na Pali Kauai coast which was featured on
the movie South Pacific. On the heart of Kauai North
shore is the alluring Hanalei bay that flows to almost
30 miles areas of hills and bays. On the South area of
Kauai shore are the superb beaches and waterfalls which
also include the magnificent National Tropical Garden,
the product of Congress legislations. The natural
result of lava formation in Spouting Horn is also found
on the Southern Kauai shore.

Anyone interested to know the cultural and historical
landmarks of Kauai can go to the West Kauai area. The
historical captain Cook monument can be found on this
Kauai area which serves as the mark for the landing of
British Captain James Cook in the island of Hawaii in
the year 1778. The place where the souls of Kauai
inhabitants rest is said to be found in the sanctified
Polihale heiau. Known as the Coconut Coast is the
Eastern area of Kauai Island. A visit to Kauai shores
will not be complete without exploring this area. East
Kauai is also notable for their beachfronts which made
it a favorite among visitors and tourists for kayaking
or boating although it may have trick currents for
adrenaline rushing adventures.

Warm accommodation is given by various establishments
and companies ready to give their optimum services.
Kauai Island has wide arrays of rooms given by famous
hotels, condos and resorts to make your stay truly a
remarkable and unforgotten one. The rates vary to suit
the budget of visitors and tourists. There are lots of
varieties of services to choose from. On the northern
Kauai shores are vacation rentals that can provide a
good view of the ocean and other landmarks. Furniture,
home accessories and other stuff are also available to
make you feel at home. Beach houses situated near the
road, shops and grocery stores are also available for
the visitors to easily have access to other amenities
that they may need and want.

Timothy A. Garyantes travels lots and recommends: http://www.fmkauai.com/
